Real Talk: Creative Contracts & Feeling Overwhelmed

The HBIC pin spurring some creativity

Recently I have been reading Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert and have been really struck by her take on ideas. You should read the book, but the long and short of it is that ideas are sentient beings in the world, meeting and attaching to people so that they can be brought into the world.

When an idea presents itself to you you can either agree to being it to life, or you can turn it away. What happens next depends on which path you have chosen there.

I think this spoke to me so strongly because as a creative I constantly generate ideas - and I know I'm not the only one.

I think that we all have so many creative ideas, so many ideas about who we are and what we want to do that we get overwhelmed by them. This leads to us not picking up and executing on many of the ideas that we have.

When we stop to think about it, it causes a crisis. Who are we if we haven't executed the ideas? What is really important to us? Who the fuck are we?! HELP.

At least I know that I feel this way when I am not creating. For so long I have identified myself as writer, that when the writing isn't flowing I don't know how to describe myself.

You feel me?
